Introduction

This language group has a population of about 10,000 inhabitants. Tchouvok is spoken in the Mayo Tsanaga Division and Mokolo subdivision.

The climatic condition is difficult as the dry season lasts from October to June. The people live on a plain, sur-rounded by mountains, which is favorable for the cultivation of millet, groundnuts, beans, and cotton. They rear animals like horses, sheep, and cattle. Women rear fowl for home consumption. The people are ruled by a Lawan who loves his language. This community has thirteen quarters.

General Information

The largest denomina-tions here are Union of Evangelical Churches of Cameroon, Catholic Church, and Union of Baptist Churches of Cameroon. Moslems are found in Ndurey, in the centre of Tchouvok.
The Tchouvok project is carried out in collaboration with the Inter Church Com-mittee (ICC), CABTAL, SIL, and the Language Committee. The ICC supervises the regular activities of the project, and selects and sends project person-
nel for training with the assistance of CABTAL and SIL.
The materials available in the Tchouvok language include a brochure on AIDS, phonology, morphology, orthography, a song book, Cuvok stories' book, and a grammar book. Ndokobai Gaston, a linguist serving with CABTAL, is making progress with the linguistic development.
Twenty-one monitors have been trained to lead Tchouvok literacy classes. Literacy classes are going on with over 300 students.
The scarcity of water creates a challenge in this community. Very hot tem-peratures from March to May make living and working in the area difficult, especially for non-Tchouvok people.

Expected Results

CABTAL expects to be able to obtain external funding for this project for ten years (2007-2017). By then, it is planned that the New Testament will be available to the Tchouvok people in their mother tongue. The commu-nity will be transformed through all aspects of the project.

Prayer point

Pray for the living and powerful word of God, that is sharper than any two-edged sword to penetrate powerfully in this community for its transformation. Read Hebrews 4:12.
